Residence
Our clients, a young couple with a growing brood, moved into Calgary’s established Kelvin Grove neighbourhood from a sleek townhome that looked great but never quite worked for lunchboxes and living. They wanted a home that felt like them: warm, characterful, and unafraid of a little wear.
Inspired by the cozy English cottages they’d fallen for abroad, we leaned into modern English cottage style, weaving traditional elements throughout – warm woods with visible knots and tone, brass metals, and a tonal palette of soft greens and blues that flows from room to room. In this renovation old-world charm shakes hands with modern family life.
The kitchen is the showstopper, where two-tone cabinetry pairs soft sage green with warm wood, crowned by a plastered hood fan with a subtle, softening curve. A butcher block island keeps things gloriously usable, while textured wall tile with a few honest imperfections nods to cottage-style heritage. In the living room, floor-to-ceiling millwork brackets a wood-burning fireplace – its herringbone tile surround grounded by a natural stone hearth – simple, considered detailing that earns its place as the heart of the home. Just beyond, the library plays it moody with its deeper blues, beadboard cabinet fronts, and wood-inset shelving begging for a slow morning coffee (kids’ books welcome, right beside the grown-ups’). The powder room, meanwhile, is a small space with big personality: beadboard wainscotting, a traditional floral wallpaper, and a curved mirror and sconce for good measure.
Rooted in charm but built for real, joyful family living, the Kelvin Grove Residence proves heritage character and modern function can share the same happy, well-loved home.
