Residence
Within one of Calgary’s most storied neighbourhoods, this Tudor home had a 1970s kitchen and bathroom begging for a second act. Our clients – geologists with a soft spot for rock – wanted a contemporary refresh that still honoured the home’s Tudor bones
Stripped to its bones, the kitchen features cabinetry and millwork painstakingly recreated to echo its Spanish-revival origins, complete with salvaged stained glass inserts and vintage-inspired brass hardware then topped with the highly veined natural stone our clients love. Overhead we removed the dated dropped fluorescent lighting to create a recessed ceiling detail, its rich texture crafted from timbers excavated from the home. Concealed behind the stained glass is a cozy coffee nook, where original hand-painted checkerboard patterns and burnished red tile meet a sleek arabascato backsplash, merging vintage allure with a refined modern edge.
In the bathroom, tradition meets fearless design. Forest green and rich burgundy wall tiles pair with multi-coloured mosaic flooring and dramatic arabascato marble, creating a palette that feels decidedly unique without veering into cliché. An artful tile transition sweeps the pattern from floor to wall, creating a fluid, enveloping effect that transforms this petite retreat into a bold statement of character.
This home is a true meeting of eras: historic character shaking hands with audacious creativity. Every corner holds a surprise, every detail earns a second look The result is a bespoke residence that’s equal parts reverence and originality.
